Levels of Autism

The DSM-5 organizes autism into three levels based on the amount of support an individual requires: Level 1 (requiring support), Level 2 (requiring substantial support), and Level 3 (requiring very substantial support). These levels are descriptive rather than predictive — they describe current needs and can change over time as a child grows and develops skills. ABA therapy is tailored to each child’s unique profile rather than a single level designation, focusing on individual strengths and goals. Understanding levels helps families navigate services, but it does not define what a child can achieve. Learn more in Levels of Autism.
