Functional Communication Training, or FCT, is an ABA approach that teaches a child a more appropriate way to communicate instead of using challenging behavior. The replacement communication is chosen based on the function of the behavior and may include spoken words, signs, gestures, or communication devices. FCT is commonly used when behavior serves a purpose such as gaining attention, escaping a task, or accessing an item. This kind of intervention is often part of a broader plan like those described in Behavior Intervention Plans.
