Extinction in ABA

Extinction in ABA is a behavior strategy in which reinforcement that has maintained a behavior is no longer provided, with the goal of reducing that behavior over time. It is not used in isolation and should only be applied after understanding the function of the behavior. Ethical practice also requires teaching an appropriate replacement behavior at the same time. Families can better understand how behavior patterns are assessed by reading Understanding the ABC ABA Model.
